 Strictly Ballroom (1992)

I must admit to loving Australian films! They have a weird way of looking at things...maybe because they are down under! This one is really off-the-wall but exactly on the mark.

When I first saw this film, I thought it was grossly exaggerated. The garish hair, costumes and makeup. Then, I happened upon the PBS coverage of the 'International Ballroom Dance Competition' and found that everything that I had seen in this film was way too true! It is hard to believe that people have the intensity and seriousness about this competition. However, this film will make you wish that you could really dance.

The music and the timing in this film are perfect. This is not a John Waters' film but if you like John Waters (writer, director and actor in 'Serial Mom', 'Hairspray', 'Pink Flamingos', etc.)...you will love this film! It has the same look and feel of a John Waters' movie. This film has quite a bit more heart BUT still has the same satiric bite.

Would you follow your own dreams or someone else's? Would you go by the rules or against them? Are you willing to be the odd man out? What would you be willing to trade for your dreams and what would be the cost? Therein is the crux of this film. A gypsy saying in this film is one clue: "To live with fear is a life half lived."

This movie is somewhat predictable...but NEVER disappointing. You have the ugly duckling turning into a swan, the sad life of someone who sacrificed his dreams and the hilarious politics of the ballroom dancing competition. If you do not dance, keep in mind that dancing is the closest thing to sex (while standing up in public)! You might want to learn.

Runtime: 1:35

This film is available on DVD, VHS, cable or satellite.

This column is dedicated to those films that most of the world missed!
