If you wish to dip (present day) into Shakespeare, this is the movie for those of you who could not sit through the 1996 Baz Luhrmann version of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. I could only make it through the first 10 minutes of the Baz Luhrmann film. 'Tromeo and Juliet' (the Troma Team release) was actually made one year EARLIER than the Baz Luhrmann version of the same story! Now you know where Baz got the idea.
Picture this...IF you decided to make a movie with your friends AND your friends are blatant exhibitionists, very talented and have a perfect sense of timing...this is the movie you would come up with! Nothing is above or beyond complete ridicule in this film. This movie is beyond tongue-in-cheek, completely outrageous and in extreme bad taste to the nth degree!
If you are not familiar with the Troma Team, my advice is just to relax and go with it! I don't know much about them except for the fact that they come from Tromaville and there is talk of sub-humanoids. They have also made a whole bunch of movies with hilarious names. I think that I would like to spend 15 minutes in Tromaville about every other day. I strongly believe that my head would explode if the time exceeded 15 minutes.
In the Troma Team's version of Shakespeare's tale, there is a squirrel who is murdered (or committed suicide), some lesbian scenes, tampax up the nose, a priest lusting after young boys, phone sex, live nipple piercing, Meat World, several missing fingers, a severed arm, a magic potion, a decapitation, a lot of incest and some public urination (which is necessary for plot development). Tromeo has not noticed, through the years, that his father happens to be black. Juliet's father calls her "daddy's little crenshaw melon!" while he locks her in a glass box! You can see that the Troma Team's version of Shakespeare's story differs greatly from the Baz Luhrmann version of the same tale.
The hyper over-acting works quite well in this movie (unlike some William Shatner attempts). There are the odd sound effects (that always made me laugh) and a lot of pretty good rock music in the background. There is blood and gore! It scores extremely high on the 'silly scale' and the credits are hysterically funny...
Welcome to Tromaville! I hope your head doesn't explode!!!
