Oliver Stone's truly warped version of the 'Little Red Riding Hood' fairytale takes you on a wild ride! This is black humor at its best! I do not like knowing where a movie is going. However, with this movie...even though I DID know where we were going (Grandma's house)...I did not know HOW we were going to get there!
The cast in this movie is perfect. Reese Witherspoon is a fascinating young actress and someone to watch for in future films. She is the 'hood' girl. Her mother is played by Amanda Plummer (hooker and drug addict). Her step-father is played by Michael T. Weiss ('The Pretender' guy) who is extremely creepy and will make your skin crawl as he paws his young step-daughter. Kiefer Sutherland has found his niche...truly BAD guy (the movie 'Eye for an Eye' is another good example of this). Brooke Shields plays Kiefer Sutherland's yuppie wife in a truly hilarious role.
I do NOT want to give away the plot (for those of you who are not familiar with the fairytale) but will set the scenario for you. A 15-year old girl's parents are arrested and she is about to be taken into the child custody system. She has been there before and it was not pleasant! What is she to do? ESCAPE! However, the junker she is driving dies a horrible death and the kindly man who picks her up on the freeway is a serial killer! His name is Bob Wolverton (a child psychologist) and the words from his mouth slide out like seductive serpents. This character is incredibly SMARMY and is played to perfection by Kiefer Sutherland. He smokes cigarettes and has a secret shed full of girly magazines (so he HAS to be a REALLY bad guy)!
This is a road trip that you do not want to miss! Essentially, this trip is about basic survival. Reese Witherspoon (as Vanessa Lutz...GREAT name) plays her role as quite feral. She is tightly coiled at all times. This causes a vague sense of discomfort throughout the entire film. Unlike a rattlesnake...you never know when she is going to strike!
