I think that greed is the most destructive of all evils! This dark tale is spun in the way that all tales used to be spun, in the dead of night, around the proverbial campfire. You have your basic dead people and the buried treasure. The men involved, however, are not truly evil people but the backwoods equivalent of 'The Three Stooges'! They are too stupid to be truly evil. The result is the same. There should be a new defense in the courts...people who are too stupid to know what they are doing! At the beginning of the movie, there is an execution about to take place. The person to be executed is the narrator of this movie. Don't worry...they only pop in occasionally to clarify what is happening. In the movie there is an interesting quote..."There's devil dogs born and there's devil dogs bred and when they die, they'll be devil dogs dead." There is something even more interesting said later..."Every man gets what he deserves when it comes to the end." And so it goes!
This movie has an excellent cast including Craig Sheffer, Gabrielle Anwar, Eric Roberts (in a great cameo appearance), Max Perlich, Anthony Michael Hall, Josh Charles, Donal Logue, Keith David (not David Keith) and John Diehl. Not to mention Giovanni Ribisi (from 'Friends') who is one of my favorite actors and his name is so much fun to roll off the tongue. This is truly black comedy.
There is an escape from prison with the help of a pill-popping prison guard and a gun flushed down the toilet. Throughout this movie there is great bluegrass music that is a real counterpoint to what is actually happening on the screen. There are numerous double-crosses and someone who is buried before his time. There are mummified fingers and two rings that have to be matched up together, to solve a puzzle. There are a number of twists and turns in this movie, a few of the worst ways to die slowly and a surprise ending! This is ultimately about revenge. And, boy is it sweet!
Sometimes, when you come back from the dead, you are REALLY pissed off. However, this is NOT the person who ultimately gets even . . .
