Have you ever wondered what actually happens to roadkill? In some states, it is legal to eat roadkill. Yummy! However, I don't think that it is legal to eat roadkill in Florida. I'm just setting the scene for this totally offbeat black comedy.
This film is essentially about promises broken and promises kept. Doris (played by the mesmerizing Fairuza Balk) has been waiting twenty years for her father, a cabbie, to come home for her birthday. This is the father who called her "Dor-Ass" and pushed her Barbie doll down the garbage disposal! Her mother is played by Louise Fletcher, who has definitely found her niche. She, also, is waiting for the return of this scumbag and spends most of her time in bed suffering from deep depression. Doris's boyfriend, Jack (played by Lenny von Dohlen), wants to be a police officer but works at a tollbooth because he is determined to locate her father. He takes Polaroid pictures of every cab and cabbie passing through the tollbooth. Doris works at a gas station nearby and she makes putting gas into a car a truly sexual experience! Doris refuses to go to bed with Jack until they are married but has ferocious sex with his best friend, Dash Pepper (played by Will Patton)...especially on her birthday. This actually makes some weird kind of sense with these characters.
Seymour Cassels plays two great roles in this film and from his mouth: "You become blind to the things you need to see the most."
As you may have gathered, this film takes place in Florida and there are a lot of bug zappers. A big one comes in real handy! There is a fear of butterflies, a wonderful way to dispose of a body and a money laundering scheme run through a tollbooth which places federal agents in palm trees. I never did figure out how you could actually launder money through a tollbooth...but that is not really important. This film has great music plus the 'love lure' which equals the double whammy!
You will hear occasional screams from invisible cats and 'cut bait' will take on an entirely new meaning for you!
