And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth; for God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. Genesis 4:25To clear up anyone's confusion, this is NOT the movie starring Charlton Heston.
What happens when you shake your fist in the face of God? Sometimes you get hit by lightning! This is a very weird dark comedy about death, the loss of faith and rebirth. There are many wonderful and ethereal visual images throughout this movie.
Seth (Aiden Quinn) has lost his wife, his home is destroyed, he is fired from his job and his dog loses a leg! How come all the bad guys sail through life and bad things happen to the good guys? Seth decides to break ALL 10 commandments in order to get an answer from God. He has determined that the difference between bad luck and the Divine Hand is: "If your shoe lace breaks every day for two years...it's time to check your Bible". Seth has been pushed to the absolute limit and wonders why God, the all powerful, allows pointless suffering. The way that Seth chooses to break each commandment is hysterically creative.
Seth's dead wife's sister, Rachel (Courteney Cox), takes him in when he is drowning in his own despair. Rachel is married to Harry (Anthony LaPaglia) who is having an affair with a woman in the witness protection program. Harry is a real sleazebag! He collects expensive guitars and his favorite jacket is made from fetal goat skin. It is VERY soft.
Courteney Cox is incredibly touching in this movie. Aiden Quinn is very intense in his quest (with a mad glint in his eyes). Anthony LaPaglia (an actor who has always fascinated me) is hilarious when dealing with the question of fate! The cast is excellent.
There is a wonderful romance woven into this story along with two old people who had $25 million deposited into their account by mistake! If you have your head in the clouds AND like black humor, you will enjoy this movie.
"If your pupils dilate...I'll know you're lying!"
