When I was very young, I didn't want a doll for Christmas...I wanted a chemistry set! To me, a chemistry set held many more mysteries than a doll. This was also the case with Graham Young. This movie is based on one of England's most famous crime cases. Graham Young went one way with his chemistry set and I went another. I poisoned my sister's dolls. Graham Young went a bit farther than I did.
I am not sure that there is a difference between someone who feels nothing and someone who feels too much. It is difficult to tell which category that Graham Young fits into. He seems to fit nowhere.
When you are an outcast from society, you find a hobby. Graham Young found his hobby in chemistry. His ultimate goal was to create a diamond but he ended up creating poison...for his family and possibly for his soul. Graham Young is living with his family who constantly make fun of him. He finally decides to poison his stepmother and he keeps very meticulous records of her demise. There is a lot of projectile vomiting and a great amount of hair loss before the death of his stepmother. This is black humor at its very best and it doesn't stop there. You can't stop someone with a mission. If you do something better than anyone else...what pleasure is there if no one else knows about it?
I never like to give away much of the plot but Graham Young does get caught and he is committed to a mental institution filled with "moral imbeciles". I think that the psychiatrist who treated Graham also falls into that category. This brings up an important point about the people in prisons and mental institutions who are released back into society when someone in 'charge' deems that they are ready to behave PROPERLY! Sometimes the patients are more intelligent than the doctors.
The first third and the last third of this movie are the best but it is well worth watching all the way through.
The selection of music in this movie is quite cunning and you'll find yourself being much more careful about what you eat or drink after watching it!
