Have you ever wished that you could turn back the clock? Even just a little bit? Maybe right after tripping over the dog and breaking a toe or falling down a flight of stairs? Actually, I say this quite often..."If I could just go back five minutes and do this all over again"!
The movie begins in the hot and dusty Texas desert in a secret government research bunker. Brian is played by Frank Whaley ("Cold Dog Soup"). He is attempting Retroactive Experiment #12 which involves sending a recently killed rat through the processor. This will be his last chance to succeed in reversing the flow of time, as the government will be shutting him down on the following day. To Brian's great amazement, the experiment is successful and the rat lives on!
Meanwhile, Frank (James Belushi) is setting up a deal with an old high school buddy to buy hot government micro chips and Karen (Kylie Travis) is being run off the road by a giant truck. On his way to pick up the money for the micro chips, smarmy Frank and his abused girlfriend Rayanne (Shannon Whirry) pick up Karen on the highway to take her in search of a tow truck. After going 78 in a 55-mile per hour zone, Frank is stopped by a Texas State Trooper. This starts a vicious chain of events. Frank has a bit of a problem with his temper (not to mention his personality). My favorite Frank saying is "women...can't live with 'em and you can't blow their heads off"!
Sam (M. Emmet Walsh) is the money man. He owns one of those gas stations where you can also stock up on beer and munchies. Believe me, you will spend a lot of time in and around there. When Frank is getting beer and exchanging hot micro chips for money, Sam shows him pictures of Rayanne with Jesse (Jesse Borrego). As Frank says, Rayanne always liked it 'south of the border'. Frank has absolutely no redeeming qualities. He decides to kill both Rayanne and Karen way out in the desert and very close to the government research bunker. Rayanne dies but Karen escapes. Brian lets her into the secret bunker just as another experiment is starting. Karen goes back in time. She knows everything that is going to happen BUT can she change the sequence of events? Believe it or not, things get a whole lot worse very quickly.
Now Karen has to go back in time again, to try to undo the damage that she has done. She talks Brian into going back with her so that he can call the police.
There is also an incredibly happy family of three in a station wagon. They keep stopping at Sam's gas station to ask for directions. Anyone watching this movie knows for sure that they are eventually going to end up in the middle of this bloody mess.
This is a non-stop action movie with some of the greatest car stunts that I have ever seen. You also get a couple of really nice explosions!
As the sign says..."Don't mess with Texas"! I wouldn't mess with Mother Nature, either!
